The mobile industry, coltan extraction and Congo. Are these companies socially responsible? How could their corporate responsibility be enhanced?

Coltan is mainly extracted in the DRC, possessing 80% of the worldwide reserves. Due to an atomized opaque supply chain, the mineral is highly revaluated and later sold all over the world. Instigated by the massive demand of multinational companies, armed conflicts arise frequently. In this connection, multinationals have implemented “DRC conflict free” Code of Conduct CSR programmes in an attempt to improve their corporate image and soothe the troubled situation in the African region. This mineral represents a key player in our technologically dependent lifestyles. Therefore, the purpose is to clarify and disclose information regarding coltan supply chain, focusing on mining and manufacturing industry players and coltan-related multinational companies, as well as their real CSR policies’ truthfulness.

First place LEEM UPM Engineering Competition

The students of the Aeronautical Schools of the Technical University of Madrid will be able to register in this competition, which begins with an introductory theoretical session to explain the basic concepts necessary for the manufacture and flight of this technology. Next, the participants will shape their ideas and build their devices. This first phase of introduction and manufacturing will take place during two work sessions of 4 hours each.

But the competition goes beyond the mere theory and the construction of the micro rocket, since the participants will put them into operation and check the parameters of their design in a specific mission. It will be then when they will move to the Illescas airfield for the launch phase.

          The World is Wine

TheWorldIsWine is a series of practical events, based on mentoring and coaching, where other entrepreneurs and people who have already faced certain situations will shepherd people to guide and shape their future. In addition, all our events will be paired with the best wines of Spain.

Each event is an exclusive opportunity to talk about personal development, entrepreneurship, how to change your life or how to launch a project. Even if each event is one-off ceremony, they will always share the same objective; find your inspiration and your enrichment.

Speakers, from many fields, will tell us their experiences from their personal and unique point of views: StartUps, travelers, mass media employees, public figures, volunteers, etc. Always related to the main theme, all attendees can present their doubts, ideas, projects or experiences.

          ReUse2Learn

Every year thousands of electronic devices from corporations in Spain are becoming obsolete and need to be replaced by newer ones. Unfortunately, the majority of the fully functioning devices are either thrown away or recycled, without being used again before the end of their life cycle.

On the other hand, many non-profit organisations are in need of such devices for their projects or operations but they might not always have connections to companies with spare devices that could be recuperated. The ReUse2Learn project aims to match the corporate donors and the non-profit organisations in order to increase awareness about e-waste and collect used electronic devices from companies to deliver them to schools and social institutions to favor the most needed.

The Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative

YLAI addresses the opportunity gap for youth, especially women, by empowering business and social entrepreneurs with the training, tools, networks and resources they need to transform their societies and contribute more fully to economic development and prosperity, security, human rights and good governance in the hemisphere.

          CLOAER MapSat

The climatological study is a laborious task that must rely on models and calculations that help to predict the performance parameters of the different meteorological phenomena. The climatological models are grouped under different purposes depending on the object of the studies, being the most common those in which atmospheric factors or movement of the oceans are analyzed. These models are known as global climatic models (GCM), and their scientific interest is growing due to the incipient global awareness regarding climate change.

The tendency to obtain a reliable model followed in recent years for investigations of this type requires the use of Earth observation satellites. The CLOAER MapSat mission (CLOud & AERosol Mapping Satellite) has, as main objective, the collection of enough data for building a global climate model and to improve the understanding of the interactions between clouds and aerosols with solar radiation, in order to make models numerical weather forecasting.

CYBERSECURITY IN THE ENERGY SECTOR: An Introduction

The energy sector is globally recognized as an industry of special importance to the National Security since it preserves basic rights, freedoms, the social welfare system for all citizens and it ensures the provision of essential services and resources as well. The generation and distribution of energy is a crosscutting activity that affects the entire functioning of a country offering competitive advantages within global markets. Operators of these services and companies dedicated to developing solutions for their own protection believe that the greatest risk comes from the side of information security, because that is precisely the most vulnerable aspect of infrastructures.

Pre-Design and Buckling Effect Analysis on a Fuselage with Honeycomb Sandwich and Aluminium Structure

Structural design is of critical importance to aircraft safety, costs and performance. The overall cost is related to the structural design in many complex ways, but typically aircraft end up costing between 350$ and 850$ per kg. In addition to its major and direct impact on cost, the aircraft structural weight affects performance. Every kg of aircraft structure means one less kg of fuel when the take‐off weight is specified.

Before the structure can be designed, the loads that will be imposed on the aircraft must be determined. Each part of the aircraft is subject to many different loads. In the final design of an aircraft structure, tens of thousands of loading conditions may be examined. In addition to the obvious load categories, such as wing bending moments due to aerodynamic lift, many other loads must be considered. These include items such as inertia relief (the inertial forces that tend to reduce wing bending moments), landing loads, pressurization cycles on the fuselage, etc.

This project analyses the pre‐design, linear static, modal and buckling effect analysis on a fuselage with honeycomb sandwich and aluminium structure in a specific flight case given by the flight envelope.
